Santa Ana College (SAC) has offered a training program for pharmacy technicians planning to work in outpatient, inpatient, and home health care pharmacy. In 1984, SAC became the first community college in the United States to be accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The hospital residency program at MUSC, one of the oldest and largest residency programs in the United States, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and was recognized with the 2008 American Society of Health System Pharmacists Award for Excellence in Residency Training (Program Award).

Pharmacy technicians help pharmacists with technical tasks in community and hospital pharmacies, as well as several additional settings. Accreditation by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) is a sign of the quality of this program.

You will follow a modular format of study. In your first semester (you may start in the fall or spring semester), you will take three five-week instructional modules. In your second semester, you will have two clinical experiences.

Current pharmacy technicians may upgrade their skills and meet continuing education recertification requirements by enrolling in specific courses.

Purpose: This residency is designed to provide an organized and directed, but flexible post-graduate experience in the specialized area of drug information evidence-based practice. The program provides a highly marketable skill set that can be applied in virtually any pharmacy practice setting.

Duration: 12 months (July 1 to June 30).

Accreditation: This residency is not accredited by an accrediting body. This is by choice of the program directors. The residency generally follows the definitions and guidelines set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and would likely be accredited if accreditation was sought. However, at present time, the program directors have opted not to pursue accreditation.

This program prepares you to assist a Registered Pharmacist. Graduates work in retail or hospital pharmacies, where they compound and distribute medications, develop intravenous admixtures and provide other pharmaceutical supplies.

Pharmacy Technician Degree at Midlands Technical College

The Pharmacy Technician program teaches students proper pharmacy operations under the supervision of registered pharmacists.

The curriculum combines classroom and experiential learning into a well-balanced program of study. Students will train in pharmacies while receiving exposure to the duties carried out by the pharmacist and pharmacy technician in preparing drugs, filling prescriptions, pricing, patient profile records, drug calculations, controlled substances, IV compounding and other pharmacy-related activities.

Midlands Technical College is accredited for pharmacy technician training by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
