ABE & ESL Tuition Waiver

Students enrolling in Adult Basic Education(ABE) or English as a Second Language(ESL) classes are charged $25.00 per person per quarter. An ABE/ESL tuition waiver may be granted for students whose combined monthly household income (includes spouse if married) is:
$1,358 for a one-member family
$1,821 for a two member family
$2,285 for a three member family
$2,749 for a four member family

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Skagit Valley College offers Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses for students who do not have a high school diploma and who need instruction in reading, writing, math, or GED (General Education Development) test preparation. Courses are individualized to meet the needs of each student. Daytime and evening courses are available. Students may enroll for day classess at anytime during the quarter. Prospective students must apply in person at any campus or center.

English As A Second Language (ESL)

English as a Second Language classes provide instruction to non-native speakers of English. Classes emphasize beginning to advanced listening, speaking, reading, writing, and computational skills. Job readiness is a component of all Adult ESL courses, as well as the practical use of English in everyday life.

Courses coded 040 or higher are offered to students who have been admitted to campus credit programs. Academic ESL classes are intended to prepare non-native speakers of English for transition into academic studies at Skagit Valley College.

General Educational Development (GED)

The State Superintendent of Public Instruction has authorized Skagit Valley College, as an official testing agency, to give the General Educational Development test to qualified applicants. This is a nationally used test for people who do not have a high school diploma. Upon satisfactory completion of such tests, the state superintendent will issue a Certificate of Educational competency, Grade 12.

If you would like to take the GED test, contact (360) 416-7654. To help prepare for the tests, you may enroll in Adult Basic Education classes. Anyone 19 years of age or older is eligible for the testing program; a testing fee is required. People under the age of 19 may test for the GED with the approval from their high school. SVC also offers GED test preperation for adult students who receive a TANF Grant. Courses are offered through WorkFirst.

II. Faculty of Dentistry: 17 students
 Qualifications
I. Foreign students eligible to apply to Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) refer to those who do not have overseas Chinese status or ROC nationality.
II. Applicants who have dual nationality combining ROC nationality and foreign nationality are not eligible to apply for admission pursuant to the regulations for a period of eight years after the date on which their ROC nationality is revoked by approval of the Ministry of the Interior.
III. Foreign students who have already completed the application process for a degree program, or who have been expelled from any ROC university, are not eligible to re-apply for admission. Breaking either of the above rules will result in immediate cancellation of the applicant’s admission or deprivation of the applicant’s recognized status as a student of KMU.
IV. Required academic performance:

A. Qualification for studying at Faculty of Medicine for Post-Baccalaureate
a. Bachelor degree or higher from a foreign institution, verified by the ROC Representative Office.
b. GPA is required to be “B” or higher.
c. At least four credits respectively for General Biology (including laboratory) and Organic Chemistry (including laboratory).
B. Qualification for studying at Faculty of Dentistry
a. A foreign high school diploma verified by the ROC Representative Office.
b. GPA is required to be “B” or higher.

 Required Documents
I. A completed application form.
II. A photocopy of the highest education diploma verified by the ROC Representative Office in the country of their original school (Verified copies both in English and Chinese are required). The last year students must submit their diploma when they matriculate at KMU; otherwise, their admission will be cancelled.
III. An official transcript of academic records in English or Chinese with verification by the ROC Representative Office in the country of their original school.
IV. Two letters of recommendation.
V. Health certificate including HIV test report.
VI. A typed study plan in Chinese or English.
VII. Financial statement (proof of sufficient funds for studying in Taiwan).
VIII. Foreign student admission is only for applicants who do not have the overseas Chinese status and ROC nationality. Any applicants considered “Overseas Chinese” must expatriate ROC nationality and attach certificate of Nationality Renouncement of Republic of China.
IX. Applicant’s birth certificate and any document that shows the relationship between the applicant and his/her parents. Documents that certify the applicant’s nationality are also compulsive.
X. The non-refundable application fee of US$150 must be made payable to KMU.

** All required documents should be included with application materials. Any delayed documents or incomplete applications, except for the last year student’s diploma, will not be processed. Any affidavit won’t be accepted.

 Screening and Selection Process
I. Faculty of Medicine for Post-Baccalaureate:
All the application documents submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs will be referred to each faculty. Each faculty or graduate program will organize an admission committee to process the initial screening and selection. The notification will be sent to each applicant who has passed the initial screening to take a written exam and an interview. The committee will process the final admission, and the notification will then be sent to each successful applicant.
II. Faculty of Dentistry:
The admission committee will review the application materials to process an initial screening based on these three subjects: English, Chemistry, and Biology to evaluate the qualifications of each applicant. If necessary, interviews and written exams (including manual dexterity tests) will be incorporated. The committee will process the final admission, and the notification will then be sent to each successful applicant.

Application Timeline
All the required documents must be submitted to the Division of General Affairs of Academic Affairs Office from March 20 to April 20 of each year.

High school diploma or GED.
Completion of the NIC COMPASS test (or equivalent) with an algebra score of 41 or higher or completion of MATH 025 with a grade of C or better and an English score of 68 or the completion of ENGL 099 with a grade of C or better.
Transfer applicants must submit official transcripts of work-in-progress from current college. Final transcripts are required when available.

No course may be repeated more than once to achieve a 2.00 grade point average.
Completion of a criminal record background check prior to enrolling in PHAR 180.

HOBET 50 composite percent (minimum reading 50 percent) and MTC writing sample score of 30; or

SAT 910 (minimum verbal 430) and MTC writing sample score of 30; or

ACT 19 (minimum verbal 18) and MTC writing sample score of 30; or

Successful completion of the Pre-Health Care certificate with a 2.5 GPA and “C” or higher in each course.

Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher for all coursework completed upon entry into program.

Pharmacy Technician Special Requirements at Midlands Technical College

Students are required to purchase and maintain standard white laboratory coats, name tags and a technology patch at an approximate cost of $55.

Students must attain a grade of “C” in all pharmacy, mathematics and science courses to successfully complete the program. Only two pharmacy courses may be repeated.

Distance learners who are concurrently enrolled at one of the other technical colleges must be academically ready to take the first curriculum course in the Pharmacy Technician program.

In addition to the college’s placement test and the admissions requirements of the Health Sciences Department, specific admission criteria to the Pharmacy Technician program on the Midlands Technical College campus include:
